Haha whoa, I guess amidst all the dilla RIP mixtape drops during the anniversiary of his last week of living set this guy off?
Now this is a whack article for very many reasons, firstly he shows his arrogance by limiting the artistic relevance of dj’s and producers to being no more then a back up for a tight vocal hook or rap. And then he goes on to give them the okay for when they were spinning and mashing up records in the golden era of hiphop because they took the most ‘addicting’ part of the song and made it big. In saying this I’m sure he misses the entire point of what sampling is even in instrumental hiphop!? Not only this but he’s hassling guys like J Dilla and Madlib who were mad crate diggers of the mid 90’s.
Now, to be honest, there is a lot of bullshit instrumental hiphop around, but isn’t that just natural when a genre is popular enough for people to try their hand at it? I mean as a genre filled to the brim with ‘intellectual hipsters’ its always going to have its shortcomings, and I will often look over another ‘Dilla inspired’ mixtape, with some scene looking picture of some toy ass dude. But at the same time I’ll listen to a multitude of beats produced by some small time guy that will fuckn wow the socks off me! Even when they don’t I still appreciate hearing someone’s soul in their music, which is what is great about instrumental hiphop, its not reserved to the highest echelon of society, anyone who puts in the work can convey something through their music whether you like it or not.
Besides, this guy isn’t even talking about these tagger on’s of the genre, he’s focussing on some of the kings of the game, and I’m sure if he did a bit of research he would find a multitude of banging Madlib tracks (such as Thuggin a few posts down). This is because, while the writer thinks that producers have limited place in the field of music, on the contrary they actually maintain the whole field. They are soil. Its the creative input of these producers that determines the output. They try different nutrient, they use different compost, they even sow the dirt in different parts to come up with a range of plant, flower and bush growth. Without that soil the plants wouldn’t grow, and without those producers the beats wouldn’t flow (boo yaa haha).
So artists like Madlib, make more experimental hiphop then instrumental. Though their are no lyrics, the lack of is not the definitive part of the music so forget that word from the title. Now it is important to note the fact that half of these artists make heaps of funk inspired beats that the so called hiphop loving writer was a fan of in the 90’s. Not just funk, but a whole catalog of jazz inspired cd’s to releases focussed on neo-soul, to straight throwbacks to the mid 90’s! I mean to count out musicians with such depth in musical roster is fucking ridiculous. Look at the sheer number of series and compilations and collaborations and albums produced by these artists! and to deny their musical ability!?
Thats some fucked up shit! Upon hearing their music was only some shitty atmospheric noises that could only be understood by being stoned, those guys would be laughing their asses off that some braindead fool was actually that frustrated by his own lack of creative intelligence or inability to listen with an open mind.
I can’t even remember my other points haha but I think I remember him saying dj Shadow was removed from the artists who apparently should be banned because of his cut and paste sampling style. I’m not even going to explain the ignorance of saying that in an article hating on lazy atmospheric instrumental hiphop by producers that get too much respect.
Please in future, before you want to hate for the sake of hating please reconsider. It only makes you look like a douche bag, especially if you haven’t done your homework.
